 Rites Of Spring always was and still is one of the most inspirational and intense 
 bands for myself and for a lot of people and they have probably done more to shape the
 face of "hardcore" or "emo" as we know it today than anyone else. And this is the first 
 part of a series of split seven inches with other bands playing their music. This goes 
 way beyond being a tribute to a band or just cover songs, it's about remembering
 where an entire musical genre came from and what it did to us. 

 Both The Saddest Landscape and Funeral Diner are ex-members of more or less
 popular bands, but that really shouldn't matter. They take one Rites Of Spring 
 song each and make it their own, and they play some pretty bad ass versions.

 This four-piece outfit produces wonderful soundscapes that literally resonate

 Hella have blown away countless jaded hipsters with their intricate, winding 
 spazz-core compositions.These two men are so psychically tuned to one another 
 that at times their nstruments actually seem to reverse roles, the drums interjecting

 Pressed up on Canada's Ache imprint, this excellent little 7" finds Hella's 
 brilliantly titled "Stephen Hawking Has a Posse" paired with another intricately 
 programmed Hebden masterclass. The Four Tet number spreads its skills across a 
 delicate weave of mad percussive taps that grow and complicate themselves with 
 increasing fervour while the homespun melodies tickle the stomach. No doubt hard 
 to construct, the end result is as far removed from thoughts of technology as 
 can be - gracefully lo-fi and uplifting with equal measure. Hella, meanwhile, 
 give off loud, kick-ass drums with much orchestrated anger - something that 
 actually works a treat. Lovely.

 JENNY PICCOLO/SU 19b - split   (Deep Six)
 
 Jenny Piccolo are up to their usual with six more crazed hardcore
 songs. Their blend of fast thrashing hardcore and slow assaulting
 interludes will decimate everything in their wake. This time around
 they even do an excellent cover of Chain of Strength's "True 'Til
 Death." Japan's SU19B are equally brutal and harsh. Their sound is pure
 power violence and they display one of their influences with a Crossed
 Out cover.

 KINETIC CRASH COOP./TRENCHER - split   (Super Fi)

 limited to 500!! "First thing's first. This release is on a piece of blue transparent vinyl
 that is five inches in diameter – that's the size of a CD. That is cool. Secondly, it
 fucken rocks. German band Kinetic Crash Co-Operation's song has a scary
 atmospheric intro, followed by a brief but pleasurable slab of dirty old-skool hardcore.
 All in glorious lo-fi, of course. This filters out into wild staccato drumming and a
 drilling guitar squeal, and screamed lyrics about bloody assholes. Fun.
 Trencher manage to cram two songs onto their side of the split. They are, as always,
 poetry in motion. The funny haunted house Casio riffs make themselves known, 
 followed by hellish screams and bludgeoning grindcore. Then some nice cartoony bleeps
 and bloops, before that track is over. The next is largely similar, except with a great
 pure-static bass guitar somewhere in the mix as well. Both songs last mere seconds,
 and that's what keeps them bearable. Nice!"

 conscience they were making before, but throw a lot more chaos into the sound. 
 Male and female vocals that are absolutely insane (but beautiful when they need to
 be), truly hammering rythyms, and all out insanity. Madeline Ferguson is also back
 with a new 5-piece lineup that bears little resemblance to the 3-piece lineup on their
 previous CD. A much more energetic and diverse sound, still as urgent and frantic as
 before, but with more of an Iron Maiden influence showing up amongst the rocking and
 screaming. Being emotional never sounded so frightening.

 Sicbay takes side A with some quirky indie rock type of stuff with a
 driving rhythm section and vocals that fall between singing, speaking,
 and yelling. "Gamma Free" opens with a tight performance and a lot of
 movement with some memorable riffs that are atypical for this style,
 while "Spazz" is a cover by The Elastik Band and is more of a garage
 rock sounding thing, which is sort of derivative and not as interesting
 as their original work at all. They do have a good recording though,
 slightly rough but evenly mixed with a great bass presence. Valina
 (Austria) follows with an unusual piece ("Escort of Soda") that opens
 with reverberated singing and then heads into more indie stuff...

 Indigesti of the early 80's. Split-vinyl with 3 + 5 songs and a great artwork.

 SWING KIDS/SPANAKORZO -   (Three One G)

 San Diego's SWING KIDS existed for a couple of years during the 
 mid '90s. Their sound is comparable to that of DRIVE LIKE JEHU, ANGEL HAIR, 
 ANTIOCH ARROW, ETC. Noisy, fast and verging on total chaos. Accompanying on
 the B side is SPANAKORZO. Sharing a member with the SWING KIDS, this band
 takes on a less aggressive sound but with equal energy and drive.
                                   

 TED LEO/ONE AM RADIO -  split  (Translucence)

 This split was originally released as a 7" in 1999, which has been long out of print and
 unavailable, until this reissue on CD. Ted Leo,punk rock guru, and Hrishikesh Hirway,
 wistful crooner, each offer up two great tracks from their early days. All four of the
 songs were recorded on a 4-track at Ted Leo's home aka Radium City. This was back 
 when Ted Leo was the only Pharmacist, and this marked the debut of the
 One AM Radio.
